Reported Newcastle United target Jetro Willems will definitely become a free agent this summer.

The defender’s contract at Frankfurt is set to expire next month, and the German club have confirmed that he won’t be getting a new deal.

This is great news for the Magpies, who have long been linked with a permanent move.

Willems joined the club in 2019 on loan, but his season was cut short due to injury.

The Dutchman was stretchered off in a 1-0 win over Chelsea back in January 2020. Sadly, Willems hasn’t played since.

But could his return come at St James’ Park?

Ever since his injury, talk of a Willems return has refused to go away.

On May 1st, the Chronicle reported that he is keen on a move back to Newcastle.

Meanwhile, Bild reported last week that Willems is set to re-join the Magpies on a free. This was welcome news for Toon fans who are desperate to see Willems back at the club.

It has now been confirmed by Frankfurt that Willems will definitely be leaving the German side.

In a summer where money is set to be tight, Willems would be a great addition.

He impressed during his loan spell, combining brilliantly with Allan Saint-Maximin down the left. Willems was a real threat going forwards, scoring brilliant goals against Liverpool and Manchester City.

He wouldn’t be a marquee signing, but Willems would add more depth in a position we’ve struggled in this season.

He’s set to become a free agent next month, but hopefully it won’t be long before we see him in a black and white shirt again.
