Former Newcastle United defender Jetro Willems has got himself a new club, joining Greuther Furth.

The Dutchman has long been linked with a return to St James’ Park, but that definitely won’t be happening now.

Willems enjoyed a decent loan sell with the Magpies, signed by Steve Bruce back in 2019.

His debut was a disaster, unaware of what position he was playing. But after that he became a bit of a fan favourite.

He scored screamers against Liverpool and Manchester City, while his link up down the left with Allan Saint-Maximin was a joy to behold.

Sadly his season was ended prematurely by injury on January 18th 2020. Willems was stretchered off early in the 1-0 win over Chelsea.

That was Willems’ last appearance for Newcastle, but there was always hope he would return once he recovered.

Fans have long pined for Willems to come back. There was even talk that it might happen this summer.

In May, the Chronicle stated that the defender was keen on a move back to St James’ Park.

Bild later claimed that Willems was going to re-join Newcastle when his Frankfurt contract expired.

The 27-year-old finally has a new club, but he isn’t coming back to the North East.

Instead, Willems has signed with Bundesliga outfit Greuther Furth. He’s signed a two-year deal with the newly promoted side.

It’s disappointing for some Toon fans, who will have hoped that Willems would return this summer. But we do have multiple options in his position, with Jamal Lewis, Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett all capable of playing on the left of defence.

Meanwhile, his fitness is still an issue. He hasn’t played a competitive game since he was injured against Chelsea back in January 2020.

Hopefully Willems can get back to his best and restart his career at Greuther Furth. Good luck, Jetro!
