Burnley have been without a manager since Vincent Kompany decided to leave Turf Moor for Bayern Munich earlier in the summer. The club are now on the verge of appointing his replacement.

Burnley’s search for a new manager has been ongoing since the end of May when Bayern Munich confirmed the former Manchester City captain, Vincent Kompany as their new manager.

Kompany led Burnley to an instant return to the Premier League during the 2022/23 campaign and was lauded for the change in playing style.

He was unable to replicate that form during Burnley’s return to England’s top flight, with the Clarets finishing second-bottom and eight points from 17th-placed Nottingham Forest.

Former Newcastle captain on the verge of a return to management

Sky Sports News reported that former Newcastle captain, Scott Parker could be confirmed as the new Burnley manager by the end of the week.

The former Newcastle midfielder appeared 73 times for the Magpies in all competitions during his playing days, scoring six times.

Parker has been out of work since he was sacked by Club Brugge in March 2023. This was the second time in the space of seven months that Parker had been dismissed from his position.

The first came in August 2022 while in charge of Bournemouth, following a 9-0 defeat against Liverpool. The former Newcastle player claimed that he thought the squad was ‘ill-equipped’ for the Premier League after the heavy defeat, as reported by BBC Sport.

Parker looks to have done enough to secure a return to management though, and Burnley will hope that he can replicate his promotion from the Championship with both Fulham and Bournemouth.

Parker, should his appointment be confirmed later this week, will have fought off competition from another former Newcastle striker, Craig Bellamy for the job. The Magpies’ former striker was assistant to Kompany during his time at Turf Moor and was also considered for the position, according to The Independent.

Bellamy was placed in caretaker charge of the club following Kompany’s departure and impressed Burnley’s hierarchy enough to be seriously considered for the managerial role.

Burnley’s first game of the Championship season is against fellow relegation sufferers, Luton Town.

Burnley will be hoping Parker can get the club back to where they feel they belong at the first attempt. Whether Bellamy is in the dugout alongside Parker in an assistant role remains to be seen.
