It looked like a return to management was on the cards for former Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez, but that no longer appears to be the case.

Benitez has been linked with replacing Brendan Rodgers at Leicester City, but the Foxes have now announced who is taking the Northern Irishman’s job.

They have confirmed that Dean Smith will take charge for the rest of the season, as he looks to guide Leicester away from relegation danger. It is a strange appointment, and one that is even more baffling given rumours of Benitez heading to the King Power Stadium.

Leicester held ‘talks’ with Rafa Benitez

It was reported on Monday by Fabrizio Romano that Leicester had ‘opened talks‘ with Benitez about him replacing Rodgers.

However, it quickly transpired that the Spaniard would not be getting the job.

Reports began to circle that Leicester were also in talks with Dean Smith, who was eventually appointed on an interim basis.

Romano added that the Foxes were unable to agree a contract with Benitez, who continues to wait to make his return to the touchline.

The wait goes on for former Newcastle hero

Benitez has been out of work ever since he was sacked by Everton last season. His move to Goodison Park has seriously damaged his reputation, after being lauded as a hero on Tyneside.

He was absolutely adored for the job he did at St James’ Park, yet he appears to get no respect from the media nowadays.

It feels like clubs just want short-term solutions, which is the exact opposite of what Benitez is looking for. He is a project manager, not a firefighter.

There have been so many managerial changes this season, especially in recent weeks. There is a mass sense of panic, particularly at the bottom of the table.

Benitez would have been a good appointment for Leicester, but he would have needed time. Instead, they have gone for a quick fix and brought Smith in until the end of the season.

With the Foxes currently 19th in the Premier League, the new boss has eight games to keep them up. It will be a big ask.

As for Benitez, the wait for his return goes on.
