Anthony Gordon had an impressive first full season at St James’ Park and was one of Newcastle’s star players.
The winger had a tricky start to life on Tyneside with Gordon admitting he was surprised by the intense nature of Eddie Howe’s training sessions as reported by the Daily Mail. The former Everton winger found it difficult to cement his place in the side, but a strong summer in 2023 with England’s under-21 side increased his confidence.
Gordon was named Player of the Tournament as England’s youngsters clinched the European Championship trophy.
The momentum gained from the summer allowed Gordon to increase his fitness levels ahead of a key pre-season. His hard work and determination paid off with his most successful season as a senior player, scoring 12 goals and assisting 11 in all competitions.
His fine form led to an England call-up for Euro 2024 and also resulted in a rumoured move to Liverpool, which he is now being backed to make.
Former scout says he ‘would love it’ if Gordon signed for Liverpool

It was Ian Duke who noticed Gordon’s raw talent from an early age and urged Everton to sign him.
This was despite the Toffee’s head of academy recruitment, Martin Waldron not being totally convinced about the winger. But with Duke in Gordon’s corner, it allowed the player to be given his first real route into professional football.
Duke has now seen Gordon progress into one of the star’s of English football and has shared his thoughts on what he would like Gordon to do next in an interview with the Liverpool Echo.
He said: “Being a Liverpool fan, I’d love him to go there and kick the door down. I think he’s one of the best players around.
“I think he would improve again coming to Liverpool, playing with a batch of better players, confidence but I think he wants it, he’s a Liverpool fan – there’s nothing better than playing for your boyhood team.”
Newcastle determined to keep hold of Gordon
Having avoided selling any of their players amid fears of a potential points deduction for breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules, Newcastle want to build their team around the likes of Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak.
Newcastle want to learn lessons from Gordon’s negative exit from Goodison Park, when supporters turned on the winger and ended with Everton supporters chasing his car down the street. The club’s hierarchy are keen to stress how important he is to the side when he returns from Euro 2024 with England.
Newcastle will know that given Gordon’s surprising lack of playing time at Euro 2024, he will need to be shown that he’s wanted and loved at the club. This could be in the form of a new contract, something Newcastle supporters would love to happen.
