Newcastle United youngster Garang Kuol made his first ever competitive appearance for the club on Tuesday night.
The Magpies’ Under-21s side were in action, as they faced Mansfield Town in the EFL Trophy. The League One team came out on top, with the senior outfit beating Newcastle United‘s youngsters 3-0 at Call Lane.
It was a disappointing result for manager Diarmuid O’Carroll, who was able to call upon Garang Kuol for the first time this season.
The 20-year-old had not played a competitive game for the club since his 2023 arrival from Central Coast Mariners, with Kuol’s move to St James’ Park getting a lot of media attention.
He was heralded as a wonderkid, but two failed loan spells at Hearts and Volendam have seen the hype diminish.

Garang Kuol plays just over an hour for Newcastle Under-21s
While Newcastle Under-21s did lose 3-0, it was great to see Kuol back in action. He even had a couple of chances to score, but was denied by Mansfield goalkeeper Scott Flinders.
Kuol played 62 minutes on his comeback, with Scott Neave replacing him midway through the second half.
It has been a frustrating few months for the Australia international. Kuol played for the first-team in Melbourne at the end of last season, but that seemed to be purely because of PR.
Kuol then trained with Eddie Howe and co over the summer, only to miss the pre-season trip to Japan due to injury.
Injury then cost Kuol a loan move away from Newcastle, which was a major blow for his development.
But he is back fit now, and will hopefully get more minutes for the Toon youth side.
Newcastle team suggests youngster will not feature in Carabao Cup
The Newcastle United Under-21s team also included Trevan Sanusi. He came on at half time, replacing Johnny Emerson.
The 17-year-old was unable to inspire a comeback, as Newcastle lost to Mansfield. The result leaves the young Magpies bottom of Northern Group H, as their EFL Trophy run comes to an end.
With Sanusi involved in Tuesday night’s game, that suggests that he will not feature for the senior side against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.
Toon fans are keen to see Sanusi make his competitive debut after impressing in pre-season. However, they will have to wait a bit longer to see Eddie Howe give Sanusi a chance.
