Florian Lejeune has officially left Newcastle United.

The French defender has joined Deportivo Alaves permanently, after spending the 2020/21 season there on loan.

The star will embark on a new chapter, after a struggle for games at Newcastle thanks mainly to injury.

Lejeune suffered two serious knee injuries during his time as a Magpie, which limited him to just 46 appearances.

It was decided he would spend the 2020/21 campaign back in La Liga with Alaves, where he would hopefully be able to play consistently.

The move was a success for him, as he chalked up 36 appearances.

Some had wondered if that would mean Steve Bruce would bring him back into the fold at Newcastle.

But it was reported recently that he would be a player the club would listen to offers for.

Apparently Bruce had reservations about Lejeune’s ability to deal with the intensity of the Premier League.

The 30-year-old has now departed, and there is no word yet on how much Newcastle have received for him.

Lejeune has taken to social media amid news of his departure, writing: “I wanted to thank @nufc for all the time spent at the club.

“I met wonderful people who always have been there for me. I’m facing a new challenge and I couldn’t be more thankful to all the fans, teammates and club’s staff.

“I wish you all the best for the upcoming season.

Many Newcastle fans have wished Lejeune the best, and there were also comments on Instagram from Jamaal Lascelles, Martin Dubravka and Jetro Willems, who has been linked with a return to St. James’ Park:
