Newcastle United could yet welcome Jetro Willems back to St. James’ Park according to new reports.
The Chronicle has claimed the Dutch full-back is keen to return to the club following his loan spell during the 2019/20 season.
Willems was supposed to spend the entire season with the Magpies, but a serious knee injury ended his campaign and forced him to return to Eintracht Frankfurt.
He recently returned to the first-team picture for the Bundesliga outfit, but has struggled to break into the starting XI.
His contract there expires this summer, and there has been plenty of speculation he could come back to the north east.
Apparently Newcastle could get another chance to sign him, but Panathinaikos are also said to be in the hunt.
Willems was very much a fan favourite during his brief loan, and this claim will excite many supporters.
Newcastle must surely swoop for freebie Willems
There are probably some question marks about whether Willems is the same player as before his injury.
He hasn’t played since it happened, which is slightly concerning.
That said, given he’d be coming in as a free agent surely makes him a risk worth taking by Newcastle.
Perhaps he could be given a short contract with the option for additional years.
Fans absolutely loved him during his loan, and it’d certainly be a positive signing in the eyes of many fans.
