Keith Downie has today revealed that five Newcastle United players were missing from training ahead of their game against AC Milan tomorrow night.
Newcastle had been hoping to have a number of bodies back in for their key Champions League clash, but they may have to wait a little while longer.
Downie revealed on X that Sean Longstaff and Anthony Gordon were missing from the training sessions before confirming to another user that Sven Botman, Dan Burn and Harvey Barnes were also nowhere to be seen.
Downie says Newcastle fans shouldn’t be worried about absences
Although they were missing from the session, Downie has encouraged Newcastle supporters not to read too much into Gordon and Longstaff not being there, with the latter having made his return from injury against Tottenham.
Gordon is probably the one player who Newcastle cannot afford to lose right now given who is available. The £45m player has carried the team during difficult times this season and looks to often be the main threat in the team.
But you can’t blame fans for being somewhat reactionary when they see that certain key members of the squad are missing, especially after the season with injuries that they’ve had.
The game against Milan is one of the biggest in Newcastle’s recent history and no doubt the fans will be eagerly awaiting to hear Downie ask Eddie Howe why these five players are all absent.

Newcastle looked to be turning a corner
Against Tottenham, Longstaff and Callum Wilson had made their return from injury, the first two key players that Howe has had available to him in a very long five-game stretch in which he was selecting the same starting 11 every time.
Wilson was actually pictured in training and could be in line to start on Wednesday, or at least play an important role, with Alexander Isak looking very exhausted in the last couple of games.
Despite the two defeats, things looked somewhat bright for Newcastle ahead of the Milan game with players slowly but surely coming back into the picture, but Downie’s news has now put that into doubt.
