Newcastle United defender Federico Fernandez has posted on Instagram, after news dropped he has picked up an injury.
The 32-cap Argentina international has sustained a thigh injury, much to the frustration of many Toon supporters.
Frustration is the word, because a number of people have been clamouring for Fernandez to become a regular starter again.
The star was routinely left on the bench by previous manager Steve Bruce.
Since Howe’s arrival at the club, the South American has only made one significant appearance.
He replaced Ryan Fraser early on against Norwich City after Ciaran Clark picked up a red card. He did well that evening, and some felt he’d be starting against Burnley.
But Howe opted to bring Jamaal Lascelles back in, with Fernandez making a late cameo.
He didn’t feature at all against Leicester City.
So news of an injury for Fernandez – who has actually been linked with an exit from St. James’ Park – has been cause for frustration for some.
The player has taken to social media following the news, writing on Instagram: “Fully focused on the recovery from an injury I picked (up) last Monday. I will be a couple of weeks out. I can’t wait to be back.
Federico Fernandez injury is the last thing Newcastle need
Newcastle losing Fernandez to injury is a big blow.
Obviously Newcastle’s backline needs major surgery. Fernandez alone cannot be a transformative presence.
But he’s a better defender than Lascelles and would improve things slightly.
Him being unavailable for these tough games is far from ideal.
Lascelles must now really stand up to be counted for, with lots of Toon fans having been calling for Fernandez to replace him.
