Jose Mourinho has stated he will not leave his job at Roma amid the vacancy at Newcastle United.

The Magpies sacked Steve Bruce on Wednesday following the 3-2 defeat to Tottenham.

The result leaves Newcastle second bottom in the Premier League and still without a win this season.

Following the club’s takeover, big names have been linked with replacing Bruce. There have been rumours involving the likes of Antonio Conte.

Mourinho hasn’t been linked, but that might have been different had he not became the Roma manager earlier in the year.

The ‘special one’ was sacked by Spurs last season, and is now back in Italian football. It’s been a decent start at Roma, who are fourth in Serie A after eight games.

And Mourinho has confirmed that he won’t be leaving.

“Newcastle job? I’ve decided to stay, I’m not leaving. I signed for three years project with Roma and I’m not going to leave my players,” he told Sky Italy.

It’s a strange choice of words from Mourinho. It almost implies that he was asked about a move to St James’ Park.

If not, what else was there to decide? You can’t decide to turn down a job that you haven’t been offered.

Mourinho’s name will no doubt crop up in the next few years should Newcastle be looking for another manager – especially if they are in a better position to challenge further up the Premier League table.

The 58-year-old has always spoken kindly about Newcastle because of his relationship with Sir Bobby Robson. But will we ever see him follow in Robson’s footsteps and manage the Magpies?

Who knows, but some fans are very confused by Mourinho’s choice of words when talking about the Newcastle job.
