Freddie Woodman is in line to begin the 2021/22 season as Newcastle United’s number one.

The 24-year-old could finally get a proper chance between the sticks at St. James’ Park.

At the moment, Martin Dubravka is on the sidelines after undergoing surgery recently.

The Slovakia number one is set to miss the start of the coming season.

Number two Karl Darlow has been struggling with Covid and was hospitalised with the virus.

The Englishman has described his ordeal as ‘pretty awful’.

Bruce suggested last night that Woodman – who was recently stopped from joining Bournemouth on loan – could start the season as Newcastle’s number one.

He said (via Chronicle): “I understand and we all agree that with Freddie, it’s best to keep playing him because he’s played for two years.

“He was close to going to Bournemouth on loan, this was before Dubravka had his problem and then before Karl Darlow has had his.”

Bruce went on to say that he may have to register four goalkeepers.

Woodman’s last appearance for the Newcastle first-team came in the FA Cup in 2019 against Watford.

On social media, fans have been giving their reactions to Bruce’s suggestion he could get a chance.

Quite a few supporters are delighted at the notion of him starting against West Ham United on the opening day, with Woodman having shown real promise on loan at Swansea City in the last two years:
