While the transfer window is not yet open, Newcastle United continue be linked with a number of big moves.

Back in the Champions League next season, Eddie Howe and company can offer targets the chance to play in Europe’s elite competition.

That is a huge thing to be able to pitch to potential recruits, particularly those who aren’t absolutely certain of their futures at current clubs.

One of those is Scott McTominay.

The Manchester United midfielder has long been linked with a move to St James’ Park and those at Old Trafford are reportedly expecting an offer.

Fabrizio Romano provides update on Scott McTominay and Newcastle

Though things have gone slightly more quiet on that front of late, noted transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has provided a fresh update.

Taking to Twitter, he claimed Newcastle were still tracking McTominay, with Howe a big fan.

The Scotland international is said to remain on the club’s transfer wish-list, having also been a target in January.

Man United, however, are not yet believed to have made a decision on the 26-year-old’s future.

McTominay under Howe is an exciting prospect

Once hailed as a “special” talent by Jose Mourinho, McTominay developing under Howe would be fascinating to see.

While not always the most fashionable name at Old Trafford, the Scotland star emerged as a palpable goal threat during his country’s most recent European Championship qualifier games, scoring four times in just two appearances.

Able to operate in a defensive midfield role as well as push forward, Howe has already yielded a vast improvement out of Joelinton and Joe Willock, players in a similar position.

With more games next season, such versatility could be crucial.

Though it’s not quite clear if ten Hag would willingly sanction a move to strengthen a rival, it’s certainly an exciting prospect for Newcastle this summer.
