Eddie Howe was in the mood to praise his players following a productive Saturday for Newcastle United.
After only squeezing past Championship side Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup by way of a penalty shootout on Tuesday, Newcastle were back to Premier League duty at St James’ Park with the visit of in-form Wolves.
Howe’s side ended up winning 3-0 to move to eighth in the table and perhaps raise hope about potential Europa League qualification by the end of the season.
As you might imagine, the Magpies manager was delighted. Joe Willock was hailed after the game as he continues his comeback from an injury-hit period in his career, while two defenders also stood out.
Indeed, Howe suggested not many other central defenders could play the type of ball that saw Fabian Schar set-up the impressive Tino Livramento for his first Newcastle goal, one that wrapped up the three points for the hosts.
In fairness, it was a glorious pass from Schar, who was also hailed for his defending on the afternoon.
The only slight doubt about what was a fine goal was whether or not Livramento meant the finish. It would be cynical to suggest he didn’t but there was an element of doubt after he appeared to slip under the challenge of a Wolves defender before taking the shot, although what connection he did make was enough to send it over the line.
Schar, however, was left in no doubt.
Fabian Schar: Newcastle star responds to Tino Livramento’s goal for Newcastle
After the game, Schar took to Instagram to caption a photo of himself celebrating: “Saturday afternoon well spent.”
Livramento then responded with “Thanks bro” for the assist, to which Schar added “What a solo” accompanied by a series of mind-blown emojis.

Newcastle news: Defenders will be key
Much has been made about the manner in which Newcastle have defended of late having conceded so many goals since the turn of the year.
Clearly, that needs to improve but, interestingly, the defenders can be part of Newcastle’s attack between now and the end of the season.
With Livramento shining and clearly capable of making lung-busting runs to meet Schar’s stunning floated passes, it’s certainly another string to Newcastle’s attacking bow.
