Newcastle United’s summer transfer hopes have taken another blow after one of their targets looks set to be offered a new long-term contract.

Earlier this month it was reported that Newcastle had shown an interest in signing Sheffield United midfielder Ollie Arblaster who was recalled from his loan spell in January.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the Blades are now looking to tie down the 19-year-old for the long-term with a new contract amid interest from other Premier League clubs.

Newcastle suffer early summer transfer blow

Although Newcastle have been presented with a bit of an obstacle with the Dan Ashworth situation, but they have still started their plans for what will be a huge summer transfer window.

The squad are in desperate need of some first-team replacements in a number of areas, but they are also looking to add some young talents to the squad like they did last year with Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.

Arblaster was enjoying a loan spell in League One with Port Vale where he had netted twice and assisted one in 20 appearances before returning to Bramall Lane in January as an ‘exciting‘ prospect.

Several Premier League clubs, including Newcastle and Liverpool, are believed to be interested in bringing the teenager to their respective teams but Sheffield United want to hold on to the youngster who they think could soon be a first-team regular.

On X, Romano said: “Sheffield United are set to offer Ollie Arblaster new long term deal to plan for his future at the club amid top PL clubs interest. England U20 international could make his Premier League debut soon after being recalled from loan.”

Newcastle continuing to bring in young stars for the future

Newcastle have really been pushing this plan to bring in exciting young players into the club who may not necessarily be ready for first-team football just yet but who could develop into just that in the next few years.

While it frustrates a number of supporters as we’ve seen with Hall who is struggling to get any minutes at the moment, it’s easy to forget how young these players are and how much time they’ve got to grow into a top player.

The Magpies are particularly light in midfield in the minute which is why bringing one in January would have been ideal, but by the time the summer rolls around they may find themselves in a tricky position with so many returning.

Joe Willock, Joelinton, Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali will all be back and available, so it’s difficult to see where the likes of Arblaster could even fit in unless there is a major first-team departure.
