There are plenty of unsung heroes at Newcastle United right now, but the biggest has to be Jamaal Lascelles.
The Newcastle captain had been on the fringes for so long, tasked with just being a squad player as he handed the armband to Kieran Trippier.
Jamaal Lascelles was always praised for his leadership and professionalism behind the scenes, but it felt like he would never get a proper chance to to wear the black and white stripes again on a consistent basis.
But that has changed this season, with the 30-year-old suddenly enjoying an extended run in the side.
Sven Botman’s injury has handed Lascelles an opportunity, and he has seized it with both hands. He helped keep Kylian Mbappe quiet in the Champions League, while he was exceptional in the Premier League win over Arsenal.
Eddie Howe has been really pleased with the defender, describing him as ‘excellent’ since coming back into the side. Fabian Schar has been impressed too, as he rekindles his partnership with a man who has seen it all on Tyneside.
Lascelles was linked with a move away in the summer, while there is continued talk of Newcastle signing a new centre-back in 2024. That is when Lascelles’ contract at St James’ Park expires, and an update from the Chronicle has shared details on how the centre-back is feeling about his future.

Jamaal Lascelles keen to stay at Newcastle
According to the Chronicle, Lascelles is open to staying at Newcastle beyond this season.
For that to happen, he will need to be offered a new contract. Based on his current form, that should absolutely happen.
While he is not on the same level as Botman, he has proven that he is still a valuable member of the squad and can play an important role when called upon. Fans suddenly have a lot more trust in Lascelles – trust that probably was not there at the start of the season.
But he should be rewarded for his fine form, while his role behind the scenes should not be underestimated.
