Anthony Gordon returning to Goodison Park was always going to rile the Everton crowd.
The winger left his boyhood club under something of a cloud for £40m almost a year ago now and, after first struggling at Newcastle, has since starred.
It, however, proved a poor night for him on Merseyside. Eddie Howe’s side, who remain beset by injuries, looked tired and Kieran Trippier’s mistake allowed Dwight McNeil in to score.
The England international then made another mistake for the second goal, his under-hit pass leading to Abdoulaye Doucoure’s goal.
A late third goal sent the Everton fans home happy after they booed Gordon, albeit perhaps there was another player caught in the crossfire.
Anthony Gordon: Everton fans booed wrong player vs Newcastle
Indeed, as was pointed out by The Chronicle on their LIVE blog at 19.47 on 07/12/2023, the home support got the wrong player.
Such was their ire towards Gordon, it seems many were instead booing a bleach-blonde Bruno Guimaraes. An understandable case of mistaken identity involving the 26-year-old.
“The famous Goodison boos,” they wrote.
“Everton fans are renowned for their penchant for booing…. and it’s safe to say the abuse for Anthony Gordon’s isn’t letting up here.
“He is being hounded by the crowd with every touch. Even Bruno, with his bleached blonde hair, is being mistaken for the former Everton man at times!”

Anthony Gordon: How well did Newcastle star play vs Everton?
Gordon, who has been excellent in recent weeks, did not have his shooting boots on.
He squandered a great chance and found the target with only one of his three shots (via WhoScored). Completing only one dribble too, it’s fair to say his former club did get the best of him.
There are, of course, mitigating factors. Gordon, like the rest of the team, has had to play pretty much the entirety of three games in a row due to the relentless schedule and the injury crisis. There was also a slight concern about Gordon after the win over Manchester United to consider.
It’s all about shaking this one off, as frustrating as that will be.
