Jose Enrique believes Anthony Gordon would be an 'amazing' Newcastle signing

Former Newcastle United defender Jose Enrique believes the Magpies should press ahead with a bid to sign Anthony Gordon.

Eddie Howe’s side were linked with signing the Everton winger on Wednesday, as the club look for attacking reinforcements.

It was first claimed that Newcastle simply admired Gordon, then came reports of contact between the two clubs.

But this transfer pursuit could be short lived, with the Athletic writing that Everton have no intention of selling the 21-year-old. He’s seen as a key player at Goodison Park, and Frank Lampard doesn’t want to lose the talented winger.

Since the rumour emerged, Toon fans have been debating whether or not Gordon would be a good signing. Now Enrique has weighed in on the debate.

Enrique comments on Newcastle trying to sign Gordon

The Spaniard has taken Twitter to give his opinion on rumours of Newcastle wanting to sign Gordon, and he’s all for a move.

“What a great signing he will be for Newcastle,” he wrote.

“Really like him. Hopefully they are able to steal from Everton because really believe he can do amazing at Newcastle.”

Enrique was then questioned by a fan on his stance and explained himself.

“Is the perfect profile of Eddie. Young player with a lot of potential and been honest with you really like him last season for Everton,” he added.

Enrique could be right, but Gordon won’t join Newcastle

The fan response to Newcastle wanting Gordon has been mixed. A lot of supporters aren’t keen on signing the Toffees youngster.

Personally, I agree with Enrique and believe he would be a good addition. He’s an exciting winger who is brave in possession and commits defenders.

He’s very raw, but has huge potential. If he achieved it at St James’ Park then we would have a very special player.

However, Everton simply don’t want to sell. It would take a huge fee to prise him away from Merseyside. A figure of £35million has been mentioned, which is a lot of money for someone with just one full season of Premier League football under his belt.

Someone like Moussa Diaby would cost even more money, but is so much more talented than the England Under-21 international.

Newcastle either need to push the boat out further for Diaby, or find a cheaper alternative than Gordon.
