Newcastle transfer news: Magpies admire Everton youngster Anthony Gordon

Newcastle United reportedly admire Everton winger Anthony Gordon.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who have named the 21-year-old as a potential alternative to Moussa Diaby.

The Magpies are looking to sign a winger for next season, and the Frenchman is the club’s main target. However, he may prove to be too expensive.

That’s why Newcastle are looking at other options, and Gordon is a player they seemingly like.

Gordon had an exciting breakthrough season at Everton

While last season was one to forget for Everton, Gordon enjoyed an exciting breakthrough year at Goodison Park. He was one of few reasons for Toffees fans to be positive.

The academy graduate made 35 Premier League appearances, scoring four goals and providing two assists. His numbers weren’t great, but his performances certainly were.

Gordon is direct with the ball, willing to run at defenders with his speed and dribbling ability. He’s the kind of player that gets fans on the edge of their seats, and manager Frank Lampard is a big fan. The Everton boss stated that he has ‘great quality‘ and ‘can go a long way‘ in the game.

Newcastle fans certainly know all about Gordon. He was at the heart of both games between the Magpies and Everton last season.

He clashed with Kieran Trippier at St James’ Park, and was also on the end of a nasty tackle from Jonjo Shelvey.

While his antics certainly irritated the Toon Army, you cannot deny his willingness to impose himself on the game in a team of Everton players that rarely stepped up last season.

Newcastle admire Gordon, but move isn’t likely

Newcastle need a winger and Gordon is a player the club like, but that doesn’t mean a move to St James’ Park is on the horizon.

The Daily Mail add that Newcastle believe there is next to not chance of them being able to sign the England Under-21 international.

That’s no surprise given Everton have already sold Richarlison this summer to Tottenham. While they need to raise funds to buy new players, it would be counterproductive to sell all of their top stars.

Gordon falls into that category, and will surely remain on Merseyside.

Newcastle like him, but he will likely be playing against the Magpies instead of for them next season.
