Emil Krafth’s performance didn’t justify his Newcastle selection

Emil Krafth was selected by Eddie Howe to start for Newcastle United against Everton. For some fans, it was surprising to see him get the nod over Javier Manquillo.

Unfortunately, the Swede didn’t make much of an impact at right-back. He was booked for a foul on Richarlison and gave away three fouls across the game (Sofascore). It was a performance that didn’t justify Howe’s decision to start him.

Also, he was subbed off and replaced by Manquillo in the 89th minute. All-round it was a poor performance from a Newcastle perspective. It’s was Everton’s second win under Frank Lampard and will feel like three points dropped.

Manquillo should get the nod over Krafth against Spurs

In two weeks’ time, the Magpies travel to London to face Tottenham Hotspur. After losing their last two games, they’ll be looking to bounce back and get a result.

With January signing Kieran Trippier still out injured, Krafth, a Steve Bruce signing, and Manquillo have been battling it out for the right-back position. Manquillo sustained an injury against Aston Villa, causing him to miss a few games.

Krafth held his own for the Magpies in that time. However, with the Spaniard back fit, he should come back into the starting XI.

The 27-year-old has proven to be a reliable option in his time on Tyneside. When called upon he’s very rarely let himself down. Additionally, he’s provided some key performances this season which has been essential to Newcastle victories.

The main one which comes to mind was his performance against Leeds. He dealt with Raphinha brilliantly and won the free-kick for the Jonjo Shelvey goal.

As for Krafth, he will find it a challenge to find himself amongst the pecking order. Kieran Trippier is hoping for a return before the season ends, it could make him the third choice at right-back.

Newcastle now has a break before the Spurs clash. It will give Eddie Howe and his side the chance to get some rest and restrategize. They’re nine points clear of the drop zone and will hope to extend the gap further.
