Eddie Howe has transformed Fabian Schar’s Newcastle United career since he took over from Steve Bruce.
Schar was hardly in Bruce’s plans but Howe has made him a key part of the defence which is currently steering Newcastle away from trouble.
Howe has almost signed a whole new back four since his appointment but Schar is the man left over from Bruce’s reign who remains.
Now, the Athletic are reporting that Howe is urging the club to tie the Swiss international down to a new contract before the end of the season.
Schar’s current deal expires at the end of the current term but Howe wants to have him around, even if he just becomes a squad option next season.
Newcastle pushed hard for the likes of Sven Botman in the January transfer and it seems likely they would go back into the market, especially if survival is sealed as is now expected.
Schar’s renaissance was summed up by his ‘incredible’ display in the 1-0 win at Leeds which seemed to lift the club before the trip to Saudi Arabia.
Bruce’s reluctance to use him was always somewhat baffling, but Howe has improved every player at the club and Schar is no different.
Now, it is down to the defender to come to a financial agreement with the club and commit his future to the exciting project on offer.
