Eddie Howe told he can have ‘confidence’ that two Newcastle United stars will shine vs Leeds United

Newcastle United will be looking to make it three wins in a row when they host Leeds United on Wednesday night.

After finishing 2025 with an unconvincing win over Burnley, Newcastle managed to secure another three points with a victory over Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Bruno Guimaraes can’t stop scoring! How many will he get this season?

What a season he’s having. I dread to think where we’d be without him!

It may have been Lewis Miley who won the man of the match award via our readers, but it was Bruno Guimaraes and Malick Thiaw who scored the crucial goals in that 2-0 win.

Now, the star duo have been backed to step up once more in midweek when Leeds United arrive on Tyneside.

FPL players should invest in Bruno Guimaraes and Malick Thiaw

As part of BBC Sport’s tips for the next Fantasy Premier League gameweek, FPL expert Thomas Woods encouraged players to pick both Bruno and Thiaw for their team ahead of the next round of fixtures.

On Bruno, Woods wrote: “Another hero from last gameweek’s team, Guimaraes now has two double-digit hauls in a row. He’s a great case for not always putting emphasis on underlying data.

“The Brazilian had one shot against Crystal Palace on Sunday, scored and took home 10 points. The week before his goal came in the final minutes when a keeper howler gave him a virtually open goal. But the points keep coming and he has a nice home fixture, so pick him with confidence.”

Meanwhile, Thiaw has been backed to have another great game against Leeds and Woods even believes the Magpies can expect a clean sheet.

He said: “The 17-point hero from the last gameweek gets another starting spot. Leeds travel to St. James’ Park and, even though they have been playing really well recently, they are in the bottom four for goals away from home, bottom six for shots on target and bottom eight for expected goals. I fancy a Newcastle clean sheet.”

How many points will Newcastle get here?

Surely anything less than 12 points would be unacceptable… 👀

Leeds United clash is must-win for Newcastle

This game against Leeds marks the third in a nice run of games for Newcastle. That will end with the clash against Wolves next week, but the Magpies have to ensure they keep their good form going.

Eddie Howe’s side are now up to ninth in the Premier League table and are just two points away from fifth-placed Chelsea. To go into the FA Cup weekend around those top spots would be a great boost to start 2026.

Leeds have been in decent form of late, too, but given Newcastle are at home and the confidence is flowing, we expect the Magpies to get the job done. If they have ambitions of being in the upper echelons of the table again this season, Newcastle have to be beating the newly-promoted sides.
