Tony Cascarino has praised Eddie Howe for his decision to not loan out Lewis Miley and instead to keep him at Newcastle United where he has heavily impressed.
Miley made history yesterday against Fulham as Newcastle’s youngest ever Premier League scorer, but it’s his overall performances that have been so impressive for the Magpies.
Cascarino spoke on talkSPORT about Miley’s technical ability on the ball and praised his athleticism for such a young player that has helped him to adjust to Premier League football.
Cascarino says Howe got it spot on to keep Miley
After impressing for Newcastle in pre-season as well as the back end of last season when he made his debut, there was a question about whether or not a loan move would help Miley’s development.
However, Howe was keen to keep the midfielder in and around the first team so that he could benefit from learning from the other players as well as playing a few games.
With the current injury crisis Howe will be grateful that he did keep Miley around, though he’s perhaps playing a bit more often than he would have initially liked.
The sudden inclusion of the teenager into the first team has massively helped his development, though, and we can now see how brilliant the young man is at coping under intense pressure.
On talkSPORT, Cascarino said: “Yeah, he’s got a lot about him, he’s good technically, he’s a great athlete, he gets around the pitch.
“I think there’s going to be goals in there along the way, I think he’s going to learn and develop that.
“Fair play to Eddie Howe, he didn’t want to send him out on loan in the summer, he was wanting to keep him as part of the group and the reason was because he thought he was going to play football this season for the first team.
“Yeah, there’s been a glut of injuries and he’s now in the team. It’s a really good story and Lewis Miley’s going to be a player and he’s only 17.”
The sky is the limit for Miley
Miley has already shown the potential to be a quality midfielder for Newcastle, and some would argue that he already is one of the best at the club.
His performance against Fulham, in which he was only playing because of an injury to Fabian Schar, was once again brilliant and exemplified how hard he’s been working off the pitch.
There are some qualities that you can see that he’s picked up from his teammates like Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, but he looks to be a combination of everything they’re so good at.
We could be seeing the young man representing Newcastle for the next 10 or so years, but Howe will want to keep Miley’s feet on the ground and continue to build on his brilliant start.
