It’s going to be fascinating to see what becomes of Anthony Gordon this season.
While an adaption period was always going to be needed, it’d be fair to say Newcastle did not see a huge amount of return on their £45m investment during the opening few months of Gordon’s career on Tyneside.
The player himself has opened up about the initial struggles but, thankfully, appears to be in a much better place now.

Having starred for England at the U21 European Championships, it seems the 22-year-old is in a good position to come good on Eddie Howe’s assertion that a whole pre-season for the club would be a massive help for the former Everton winger.
Indeed, Howe is expecting big things.
Eddie Howe says Anthony Gordon is so much better now
After some decent flashes during pre-season, a lot is expected of Gordon.
Speaking after the win over Fiorentina, Howe said (via The Athletic): “I see a player with confidence, with huge ability, huge talent.
“I always think there’s more to come from him as well, so that’s a great thing from my perspective… We’re seeing a big improvement in his general performances. He’s in a good place.”

Time for Gordon to prove his worth
At 22, Gordon has a lot of time to develop.
Still, this season has to be a big one for the player. With Newcastle having put a lot of faith in him, Gordon must now repay that with a big season for the club.
Handed the No.10 shirt, getting more of a return out of their investment has to be a priority. Clearly, Howe believes there’s a huge talent waiting to shine and the conditions look perfect.
Coming off the back of such a good tournament and having had time to settle at St James’ Park, the pressure is on now.
