Eddie Howe has now given his thoughts on Alexander Isak’s disallowed goal yesterday which saw Newcastle United miss out on a point against Luton.
Isak thought he had scored the equaliser after a brilliant finish in the second half, but the linesman had raised his flag and the decision had then been confirmed by VAR after a lengthy check.
In an interview with NUFCTV, Howe claimed that his initial reaction after checking the monitor was that the goal should have stood, but he also had little complaints about the use of VAR.
Howe says Newcastle’s equaliser was onside
It was a very tight call and difficult to tell from the angle that the VAR camera provided, but the goal was ultimately disallowed as Isak’s shoulder was deemed ahead of the Luton defender’s knee.
With Newcastle’s misfortune this season when it comes to injuries and missing out on two competitions at the very death, Howe could have used a bit of luck yesterday afternoon.
Instead, Isak’s goal was ruled offside, Newcastle would go on to lose the game as their horrific away form continues and Howe was left wondering what went wrong for the fifth time in the last six matches.
After the game, Howe gave his honest thoughts on the goal but, unlike others, remained calm and collected throughout his analysis of it.
In his interview, Howe said: “It’s funny because I quickly went to the monitor and had a look and my gut instinct thought it was onside.
“But that’s what VAR is for and they’ve come up with a different decision.”

Newcastle have to be much better away from home
Yes, maybe some do think the goal should have stood, but that should not overshadow the fact that Newcastle were once again second best when playing away from home yesterday.
This makes it just one win from nine games when not playing at St James’ Park in the Premier League, a record which puts them behind the likes of Burnley, Wolves and Crystal Palace.
If Newcastle are to have any hopes of qualifying for Europe next season, let alone Champions League, then they have to become more resilient to playing away from home.
