Eddie Howe says Newcastle star has never had a better game for the club

Newcastle United broke a record on Sunday.

A huge 8-0 win over Sheffield United was the first time in Premier League history any team had eight different goal scorers as Newcastle ran riot.

After such a big win, it’s not always easy to pick out one player in particular.

Still, one star did shine particularly bright.

Indeed, Anthony Gordon was crowned ‘Man of the Match’ by Jamie Carragher with a significant portion of the game remaining at Bramall Lane for a reason.

Brought on for Harvey Barnes after his injury, the 22-year-old played a key role in Sean Longstaff’s opener before curling in the fifth goal of the afternoon.

Unsurprisingly, Eddie Howe was full of praise.

Eddie Howe seriously impressed by Anthony Gordon after Sheffield United game

Speaking after the game, Howe was effusive with his compliments about the winger.

“He’s a top player,” Howe told Match of the Day (via BBC Sport’s LIVE blog at 19.13).

“So our idea was just to rest him after two really big physical efforts. He comes on straight away and yeah I think that’s his best game in a Newcastle shirt.

“I thought he was outstanding and he’s really found a good rhythm this season and hopefully that continues.”

A £40m bargain for Newcastle

Few would doubt the fact that Gordon’s opening few months on Tyneside proved difficult after a £40m move from Everton in January.

Still, Howe always said the winger would improve after a full pre-season and, already, that is proving to be the case indeed.

It may be a cliché but having Gordon playing at this kind of level is like a new signing. Already, he’s chipped in with two goals and two assists, while also winning the penalty Callum Wilson scored to beat Brentford.

What a signing he’s proving to be.
