Joe White has only made one appearance for Newcastle United so far, but Eddie Howe hopes he can have a big future at St James’ Park.
The midfielder returned to Tyneside in January after a loan spell with Crewe Alexandra, and it looked like he would go out again to continue his stint in League Two.
However, Newcastle made the decision to keep Joe White at the club given their injury issues. Eddie Howe decided it was best to have White in the first-team squad, and he has trained with them ever since.
We even saw the 21-year-old make his competitive debut, coming off the bench in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth last month. White was tidy in possession that day, but has not featured since.
With Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson back from injury, it is difficult to envision White getting any more minutes between now and the end of the campaign. But Howe is happy with his progress, and believes he has shown major signs of improvement since he first went out on loan to Crewe last year.
Eddie Howe thinks Joe White has improved so much
Howe has been speaking to the media ahead of Newcastle’s game against Chelsea, and was asked about Joe White’s current situation. He has not been on the bench for the Magpies’ last three games, one of which was the FA Cup which he is unable to play in.
“Joe is training with us every day,” Howe said.
“He’s working on lots of different aspects of his game. I think he’s really improving. I’m pleased with him.
“I’ve seen a big improvement, big step forward after his loan spell. I think it was a really productive time in his career. I’m hopeful that this spell with us is going to be equally as productive and he can be a big part of our future.”

Newcastle have a big decision to make with Joe White
While White is suddenly not even getting on the bench, Howe seems very optimistic about his future at St James’ Park.
He has been really impressed with the youngster’s rise in recent months, and is hoping that the midfielder can have a big future. Not only that, but Howe noted that he wants that future to be as a Newcastle United player.
That would suggest that Howe believes White has the potential to have an impact in the Premier League in the coming years, which leaves the club with a big decision to make this summer.
With talk of new faces arriving and Sandro Tonali’s suspension coming to an end, White will struggle to feature even more next season. Therefore, it might be best if Newcastle decide to loan him out again, possibly to a club much higher up the Football League than Crewe.
