Eddie Howe provides injury update on Joelinton ahead of Liverpool game

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has provided an update on Joelinton’s fitness ahead of Sunday’s game against Liverpool after he was forced off with an injury against Manchester City.

The 27-year-old picked up a problem during the second half at the Etihad when making a challenge on Phil Foden. He was forced off because of the incident and replaced by Sean Longstaff.

The Brazilian was not seen in the club’s training pictures earlier this week, suggesting that the problem could rule him out of the upcoming game against Liverpool. If so, that would present either Longstaff or Elliot Anderson with a chance to start.

However, it now sounds like Joelinton will be fit to play against the Reds, which is a huge boost heading into Sunday’s game.

Ahead of the game at St James’ Park, Howe has spoke to the media. He was asked to provide an update on Joelinton’s fitness, and the news is positive.

“Joe is fine,” he said.

“We didn’t see him in the early part of the week but he trained in the latter part so fingers crossed he’s ok.”

That is excellent news for Newcastle, as Joelinton is a key player. While Longstaff or Anderson would have provided adequate cover and done a good job, Joelinton is the type of player you want in this fixture.

It is going to be intense on Sunday, and the game could be won and lost in the middle of the park. Liverpool have limited options in midfield, which could give Newcastle the chance to dominate.

Joelinton is the type of physical presence that can give the Magpies the edge, which is why it is excellent news that he should be fit to feature.
