Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe explained why he subbed off Fabian Schar. The Swiss international was taken off with three minutes to go in their 1-0 defeat to 1. FSV Mainz 05.
He picked up a knock and the Magpies manager didn’t want to risk him. Speaking to NUFC TV, Howe assured that Schar’s injury was the only real blow to the squad thus far. However, he’s hopeful it’s not too serious.
“Overall we’ve got Fabi with maybe a slight injury concern, but mainly a clean bill of health and that was the main thing,” he stated.
“When he came off he was saying it was more crampy than a muscle pull, so fingers crossed he’d be fine, but with only three minutes to go we decided to take him off.”
It was definitely the right call to take him off. It’s only a pre-season friendly, so we can see why Howe subbed off Schar. Since signing for the Toon for £3m (Sky Sports) he’s had an up and down time on Tyneside. However, he’s undergone a renaissance under the current Magpies boss.

Schar could well have lost his place in the starting XI, but he’ll still be an important player for Newcastle
The arrival of Sven Botman means that Dan Burn and Schar will be battling it out to be his partner at centre-back. Both were excellent for the Magpies this past season.
The Swiss defender earnt himself a new deal for his performances. Howe was ‘delighted’ with the new contract and rightly so.
There were a number of things to take away from Mainz vs Newcastle. But if Howe’s optimism is to believed, the centre-back will likely be in contention for the start of the season.

If Schar’s injury is more serious it would be a huge blow. Even if he isn’t the first choice to play alongside Botman, the 30-year-old will be essential cover for the Magpies.
Whether it be filling in for cup games, rotation or stepping up to cover a potential injury, Schar will be very important. As far as cover goes, some Newcastle fans will feel at ease if he steps in for Burn or Botman.
Mainz vs Newcastle didn’t go the way Eddie Howe would’ve hoped. But there’s still pre-season fixtures at St James’ Park to play. Hopefully, Schar will be fit and ready to play against Atalanta and or Athletic Club.
