Eddie Howe now explains why 23-year-old Newcastle player had to come off vs Chelsea

Tuesday was another emotionally draining night for Newcastle United fans, but there was at least one positive from our Carabao Cup exit.

Eddie Howe was able to name Sven Botman in his Newcastle starting XI for the first time since September, with the 23-year-old recently recovering from a knee injury.

Botman made his comeback at the weekend, coming off the bench during the 3-0 win over Fulham at St James’ Park.

Toon fans and players were delighted to see him back, and he was deemed fit enough to start the Carabao Cup quarter final clash with Chelsea.

It was a game that did not go Newcastle’s way, with Eddie Howe’s side losing on penalties as they exited the competition.

It was also a game that Botman failed to finish, with the Dutchman being replaced by Dan Burn at half time. That led to some concern from fans, but Howe has now explained that this was a planned substitution.

After the Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea, Howe spoke to BBC Newcastle. He was asked about his decision to take Botman off at half time.

“That was the plan, 45 minutes for Sven,” he said.

“Trying to build his load back up rather than pushing him too early.

“We were pleased with his contribution.”

Newcastle right to be cautious following Botman’s return from injury

Newcastle are managing Botman’s minutes after such a lengthy absence. He missed 17 consecutive games with a knee injury, so the club are right to be cautious following his comeback.

Hopefully he came through the game at Stamford Bridge unscathed as he builds up his match sharpness. It was certainly a positive performance, with Botman showcasing his passing ability – a weapon we have sorely missed.

Next on Botman’s agenda will be lasting a full 90 minutes, but it is unclear when that will happen. With Newcastle playing once again in just a few days against Luton Town, it would be a surprise to see him retain his place in the starting lineup.

Perhaps the Boxing Day clash with Nottingham Forest could be the ideal opportunity to see if he has 90 minutes in the tank.
