Newcastle United take on Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final this weekend, and Eddie Howe has provided a promising injury update on Joelinton ahead of the game.

Howe has been speaking to the media in the build up to the Carabao Cup final, and was asked about Joelinton after he came off due to an injury scare against Liverpool.

The Brazilian midfielder received treatment in the second half before being replaced by Matt Ritchie. However, he did tell Howe that he was fine to carry on.

But the Toon boss ignored the 26-year-old, and took him off as a precaution.

That looked like the best decision at the time, and Howe’s latest comments suggest that to be the case.

The Newcastle manager has been asked about Joelinton’s fitness ahead of the game against Manchester United.

“We think Joelinton is ok from the weekend,” Howe said.

“There’s still a long time to go before the game.

“Joe Willock will be in a race to be fit but we’re hopeful.”

The fact that Joelinton is ok is a big boost. It should mean he is available to start at Wembley – assuming he doesn’t pick up any other issues in preparation for the game.

But what forced him off against Liverpool will not rule him out, which proves Howe was right to take him off as a precaution. While we were playing well, Howe made the right call in protecting some of his bigger players ahead of the final.

The boss also spoke about Joe Willock, who is currently out with a hamstring injury. It was previously reported that he is at risk of missing the final, but it now sounds like he has an outside chance.

It would be excellent if the 23-year-old is fit enough to make the bench. That would give Howe a brilliant option to bring on later in the game.

But the big news is that Joelinton is fine, meaning the Brazilian powerhouse should be good to go at Wembley when the Carabao Cup final against Manchester United kicks off.
