Newcastle United are now sweating on the fitness of one their star players Joe Willock ahead of the Carabao Cup final.

The midfielder was forced off with an injury during the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth on Saturday night. He was replaced by Anthony Gordon in the 36th minute, and after the game Eddie Howe sounded concerned about Willock being withdrawn.

Those concerns are now very real, and the Telegraph report that the 23-year-old is now in a race against time to be fit enough to feature at Wembley against Manchester United.

The Magpies travel to the capital on February 26th for their first cup final since 1999, and will have Bruno Guimaraes back after suspension.

However, a hamstring injury means that one Newcastle midfielder is now in danger of missing the club’s biggest game in years.

Joe Willock could miss the Carabao Cup final

The Telegraph state that Willock is in danger of missing the cup final. He has two weeks to recover from the hamstring injury that forced him off against Bournemouth.

It will be devastating for Willock if he is unable to play against Man United. He has been enjoying a fantastic season, and his speed with the ball could have been a real weapon on the huge Wembley pitch.

Howe will be gutted too, as he has used Willock in every game this season. The former Arsenal man has made 29 appearances, with 25 of them coming from the start. The Toon boss has been full of praise for the Steve Bruce signing, and admitted earlier this year that he has been ‘excellent‘.

If Willock is unavailable, it means that Howe’s midfield effectively picks itself. Bruno will return after suspension and play alongside Joelinton and Sean Longstaff.

It will mean that there is a space up for grabs in attack that Allan Saint-Maximin will be eyeing. He has started the last two Premier League as he looks to build up his match fitness and re-find his form.

But in an ideal world, Howe will be able to choose Willock. The £25million man has been immense this season, and it would be a huge shame if he misses the final.
