Eddie Howe has praised Ange Postecoglou ahead of Newcastle United’s clash against Nottingham Forest.

Postecoglou, who won the Europa League with Tottenham last season, has overseen just six games since replacing Nuno Espirito Santo at the City Ground in September.

However, the former Spurs boss is struggling. He’s yet to record a win with the club and, on Thursday, saw sections of the home support turn on him.

Groups of supporters inside the City Ground were heard chanting “you’re getting sacked in the morning” during their 3-2 Europa League defeat to FC Midtjylland.

Still, Howe has been full of praise for his counterpart ahead of Newcastle United vs Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Eddie Howe praises Ange Postecoglou before Newcastle United vs Nottingham Forest

The Newcastle United manager was keen to point out Postecoglou’s proven track record of success.

The 60-year-old has won trophies all around the world. Though much has been made about his style of play, Postecoglou has lifted silverware in Australia, Japan, Scotland and England.

Howe said: “Ange is an outstanding manager with a good track record, it is a big match for us.”

When asked about the fickle nature of being a football manager, he added: “I think we all know when we go into the job the fragility of it really. No amount of success previously can take you out of that firing line.

“We’re all in it, we’re all subject to the same forces of we’re dictated to by results. But I think in any moment, where it’s good or bad, you’ve just got to be yourself, which Ange very much is.

“I try to follow suit and just be myself and do the job to the best of my ability.”

Ange Postecoglou’s record against Newcastle United

St James’ Park has not been a happy hunting ground for Postecoglou over the years.

Spurs lost on both visits to Tyneside under his watch, scoring once but conceding a total of six goals.

Postecoglou, however, did record a victory against Howe’s side in a 4-1 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in December 2023.

Newcastle will be strong favourites for Sunday’s game and failing to pick up three points heading into the international break would be a huge disappointment.

Howe’s side have won only one of their opening six League games and could certainly do with a morale-boosting victory before the break in domestic football.

Newcastle will be back in Premier League action when they travel down to Brighton on Saturday, 18 October, 2025.
