Eddie Howe is now privately complaining about two things at Newcastle

Since becoming Newcastle United manager two years ago, Eddie Howe has not had a lot to complain about.

The Newcastle players have bought into his style of play, and have become better in the process. He has received unwavering support from the St James’ Park crowd, who give his team an edge every time they are at home. And he has been backed by the owners, who have invested a lot of money in top quality players to help him build a squad that he believes can be successful.

And successful is exactly what they have been. First they avoided relegation, which looked impossible shortly after Eddie Howe‘s arrival on Tyneside. Then, in his first full season in charge, he guided the Magpies to a cup final at Wembley, and managed to finish in the top four to qualify for the Champions League.

It is staggering what he has achieved in such a short space of time, but Howe is a perfectionist who is always looking for more. He wants a better squad, he wants to score more goals, he wants to concede less goals. Ultimately, he wants to win a trophy.

Those things will come in time, but patience is required. However, it appears that Howe does have a couple of complaints about goings on at Newcastle, particularly in the transfer market.

Eddie Howe has two transfer complaints at Newcastle right now

According to Miguel Delaney’s weekly newsletter for the Independent ‘Reading The Game’, Eddie Howe has two things that he has complained about privately at Newcastle United.

The first is that the club have been limited in what they can spend, due to the rules of financial fair play. Despite having the wealthiest owners in the world, Newcastle have not been able to truly go out and splash the cash. That has forced them to box clever at times, which we saw in the summer when they signed Lewis Hall on loan.

Howe’s second reported concern is that the club have struggled to tempt truly elite players to the North East of England, which has always been a problem for the Magpies.

Sadly for Howe, there is no short-term solution to his concerns.

The only way to increase the club’s spending power is to increase revenue. That will come from better sponsorship deals and consistently competing in the Champions League. That is why Newcastle will be desperate to qualify for next season’s competition.

In terms of attracting mega names, that is something Howe can influence, but only by ensuring Newcastle continue to improve. Elite players want to win trophies, and there is no doubt that they will be willing to move to Tyneside if there is the lure of silverware.

It may continue to be an issue to get some players to move to Newcastle, but if that is the case then maybe they aren’t the right players after all.
