Sean Longstaff will get an opportunity to fight for his Newcastle United future, Eddie Howe has confirmed.
The manager was speaking ahead Sunday’s Premier League clash with Leicester, where Newcastle will go in search of back-to-back wins for the first time since May.
Howe was asked about Longstaff’s future, a player who has barely featured since the new manager came in.
The 24-year-old hasn’t started a game since the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea, back when Graeme Jones was interim boss.
Longstaff has one appearance under Howe, coming on in the 71st minute in his debut game against Brentford. Including stoppage time, Longstaff has only played 24 minutes under the new manager.
This is a pivotal time for Longstaff, whose contract at St James’ Park expires in the summer of 2022. He’s playing for his future, and Howe has stated that the midfielder will get a chance.

“I’m aware of course [about his contract situation], Sean is a very good player and he will have an opportunity to showcase his talent,” Howe said, as reported by the Chronicle.
“He can show to me and the club he has a long-term future here. It’s in his hands as well not just our hands.”
When will Longstaff get his chance?
Opportunities have been limited for Longstaff since Howe came in.
Jonjo Shelvey and Joe Willock have started all four games in centre-midfield, while Longstaff and Isaac Hayden have been forced to sit on the bench.
Willock has struggled, but Howe is yet to turn to his options in reserve. A change could come against Leicester, but it feels unlikely.
In truth, Longstaff might have to wait until January to get a chance. He’s surely likely to start in the FA Cup against Cambridge United.
But with fixtures coming thick and fast, perhaps he will get a Premier League opportunity over the Christmas period.
With his contract winding down, Longstaff is under huge pressure to perform. He needs to fight for his future at St James’ Park.
