Eddie Howe calls up Newcastle United youngster who idolises Steven Gerrard to first-team training

Eddie Howe continues to rely on youth players in Newcastle United first-team training.

Plenty of Newcastle United talents have been given a chance to work with the senior squad as of late. Sean Neave trained last week, while 15-year-old Sam Alabi was also involved in Newcastle United training.

That trend has continued this week, as the Magpies prepare to face Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park on Sunday.

Sven Botman was not seen in Newcastle United training on Wednesday, but there were some youngsters involved.

Newcastle United have released training photos from Wednesday’s session.

Leo Shahar was involved last week, and he was spotted again ahead of the Nottingham Forest clash. The 17-year-old is a very promising right-back, but is yet to make his professional debut.

There was also an appearance from Ellis Stanton.

He has been pictured challenging Alexander Isak for the ball, as Howe ponders changes to his starting XI after the defeat to Manchester City.

Stanton is extremely unlikely feature, and his involvement in training is likely because of Joelinton’s injury.

Who is Newcastle United youngster Ellis Stanton

Stanton is a 20-year-old midfielder whose only first-team minutes have been in friendlies.

Stanton was part of Newcastle United’s 8-0 defeat to the A-League All Stars, as Howe put out a team of youngsters for the post-season friendly in Australia back in May 2024.

The youth player, who was actually born in Sunderland, was also involved in pre-season preparations for the current campaign, coming off the bench during Newcastle’s Sela Cup win over Brest. Harvey Barnes scored the only goal of the game that day.

He has made 10 Premier League 2 appearances this season for Newcastle United’s Under-21s side, scoring one goal.

According to Newcastle’s official website, Stanton’s idol growing up was Steven Gerrard.
