Newcastle United lost the Carabao Cup final vs Manchester United on Sunday, despite Eddie Howe arranging for a Toon legend to give his side words of encouragement before the game.
According to the Athletic, Alan Shearer was invited to speak to the players on Friday before he made his way down south for the Carabao Cup final.
It had been reported during the week that Howe was trying to arrange something for his players in the buildup to the final, as he discussed the possibility of meeting up with Kevin Keegan.
Another club legend in Alan Shearer was brought to the club’s training ground ahead of the final and provided some inspiring words for the players.
The Athletic state that Shearer spoke about what the final means to the fans, and addressed his past experience of playing for the club at Wembley. His words went down very well, and he was applauded by Howe’s squad, the report states.

It was a great idea from Howe to get someone from Newcastle’s past to speak to the players in the buildup to the game. Sadly, it did not have the desired impact.
The Magpies were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United at Wembley, with goals coming from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford.
But Newcastle played with pride and heart, and certainly did not let the supporters down. Fans showed the players how much it meant towards the full time whistle, as the pre-match flags were waved once more to create an incredible sight.
It just wasn’t to be for Newcastle. We were beaten by the better team on the day. But the most encouraging this is the club’s belief that this is only the beginning. The owners want more and so do the players.
The club is being geared up for success, and reaching a major final so early into the new ownership is a real achievement. Now we need to return, and try to end our trophy drought.
