Newcastle United co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi has vowed that ‘this is just the beginning’ after the Magpies lost the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

Eddie Howe’s side were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final, with first half goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford ensuring that Newcastle’s trophy drought goes on.

While the result was heartbreaking, it was an incredible day and an incredible weekend for the Toon Army. Thousands of fans descended on the capital, with black and white shirts everywhere you turned all weekend.

Being inside Wembley was special throughout, with a beautiful display of defiance in stoppage time from supporters. The flags that produced such a glorious visual before kickoff were waved once more, as the supporters paid tribute to the players.

Win or lose, it didn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. It would have been amazing to see Newcastle win a trophy, but just getting to the final was an achievement. And co-owner Ghodoussi believes that there is more to come.

Mehrdad Ghodoussi thanks Newcastle fans after Carabao Cup defeat

After Jamie Reuben’s message to Toon fans, Ghodoussi also took to Twitter after the game to thank them for their incredible support inside Wembley.

He wrote: “This is just the beginning. Thank you for being the best supporters in the world. We will bleed black and white for you. We will be back, and we will win.”

Those first five words are a warning to the rest of English football. We may have lost on Sunday, but we will come again.

With the way the club is now run, we are being setup for sustained success. While this cup run has felt like a fairy tale, the owners want it to become the norm.

The support in London was absolutely sensational, and the players gave it everything. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, and we lost to the better team.

But the players will be hungry to experience this again. And fans will hope they don’t have to wait another 24 years before the next trip to Wembley.

Ghodoussi doesn’t think it will be. He believes this is just the start of a glorious future for Newcastle United, and has vowed that the Magpies will win when they next return to a final.

Here’s hoping you’re right, Mehrdad.
