Eddie Howe admits Newcastle 25-year-old was brilliant in training ahead of Liverpool

It was a tough week for Bruno Guimaraes, but Eddie Howe has admitted that the Newcastle star trained brilliantly heading into the Liverpool game.

The Brazilian played an unfortunate part in Darwin Nunez’s winner on Sunday. He gave away possession in the middle of the park in the 93rd minute, allowing the Reds to score a second and stun St James’ Park into silence.

It was an agonising way to lose a football match, and it must have been crushing for Bruno at the end of a challenging few days on Tyneside.

The 25-year-old had lashed out at supporters on social media earlier in the week after a post had hinted that he was part of a group of Newcastle players who were to blame for the loss to Manchester City. Bruno was not happy, and rightly so. He criticised those supporters for having short memories after losing to the best team in the world.

Then came the Liverpool game, which ended in back to back defeats for the Magpies. While the Man City loss was disappointing, this was simply heartbreaking.

Eddie Howe admits Bruno Guimaraes has been ‘fine’

After the game, Howe spoke to the Chronicle. He was asked about Bruno’s mood following his midweek altercation with supporters and the last-gasp loss to Liverpool.

“Bruno has been fine, he’s trained very well and he was part of a team performance today that was outstanding for half an hour,” he said.

“I thought he really played his part as we developed into the match. But there are things, as with every player, that we will look at and reflect and try to improve.”

More to come from Newcastle’s talisman

Howe is really happy with how Bruno trained, which is a good indicator about how he is feeling behind the scenes. Obviously he will be disappointed by the start to the season, while there has been some discontent about his performances.

Bruno probably has disappointed at times, but that is more a reflection of just how good he is. He has set the bar so high for himself that anything lower than his usual standard is deemed a poor performance.

The truth is that he has been solid, but far from the star attraction in black and white. He will be eager to change that, as for so long he has been Newcastle’s headline act.

Hopefully he has another good week in training and can help Newcastle get back to winning ways this weekend away to Brighton.
