Darren Bent left shocked by Jamie Carragher’s England squad as £92k-a-week Newcastle star is omitted

On Twitter, TalkSPORT pundit Darren Bent has questioned Jamie Carragher’s preferred England squad to travel to the World Cup, with Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson omitted from his 26-man shortlist.

With Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate expected to name his finalised squad ahead of Qatar on Thursday, a number of commentators have been getting in on the action of the world’s biggest tournament.

Taking to Twitter, Jamie Carragher shared his England shortlist. This came with the notable omission of Magpies forward Wilson, who is currently netting for fun in the Premier League.

Shocked by the 30-year-old’s absence, Bent took to the comments to question his decision.

He said: “No Wilson?”

Having scored six goals in ten Premier League games this season, Wilson is on firing form for the Magpies.

With the Toon third in the table, the number nine has helped lead Eddie Howe’s side to an incredible start to the league campaign – certainly earning his £92,000 weekly wage.

As a result, there should be no doubt as to whether he should be included in Southgate’s 26-man squad.

Due to his emphatic instinct in the final third, Wilson would be the perfect forward to bring off the bench when England are looking for a late goal.

He would also be a useful understudy to Harry Kane, who the manager sees as his star man. If needs be, he would be a brilliant replacement for the Tottenham talisman.

Whether the Three Lions boss decides to take Ivan Toney over the Magpies striker, this awaits to be seen.

But Wilson has certainly demonstrated this season why he deserves to be on that plane to Qatar later this month.
