Eddie Howe has added his name into Newcastle United’s history books this season.

By winning the Carabao Cup this month, Newcastle United ended a 70-year wait to lift a major trophy.

At the same time, Eddie Howe broke a 17-year record to become the first English manager to win a major honour. It marks him as the best English manager in the country – and one of only two managing in the Premier League.

Despite being the best English manager, Howe was overlooked by England, with the Three Lions instead choosing to hire Thomas Tuchel.

Eddie Howe told he could manage Premier League rivals

Howe’s contract at Newcastle is valid until 2027 and he seems happy to be part of the club’s long-term plans.

PIF launched ‘Project 2030’ this month with the intention of making Newcastle a footballing powerhouse in the next five years. PIF want Howe to stay for the long term, and adding a trophy to his list of achievements will only make his position stronger.

However, it has been suggested by pundits Simon Jordan and Danny Murphy that Eddie Howe could leave Newcastle for a Premier League rival.

Speaking via talkSPORT, host Jim White said: “If Pep Guardiola leaves Man City, I couldn’t see them bringing in an English manager.

However, Murphy argued: “Eddie Howe could manage at Man City.” and Jordan was quick to agree, saying: “He’s an exception. There is an argument for Eddie Howe.”

“But yet again it is a different dynamic.

“Newcastle have come from a position where the ownership model brought out such a reaction from the fanbase. The currency that’s gone behind Newcastle in terms of the energy behind the team because anybody but [Mike] Ashley came in, and the fact they’ve bought well and Eddie has done a decent job.

“But when you go to the champions of England or a club that’s won the Premier League five times in the last decade, the expectations are very different.”

Eddie Howe’s stance on staying at Newcastle United

In Howe’s three years as Newcastle manager, he has saved the Magpies from relegation, qualified for the Champions League and now won a trophy.

Newcastle could not ask for much more from Howe, and there is growing optimism that he can take Newcastle back to the top of English football.

Over the summer, there was worry from Newcastle fans that Howe would be tempted by the England job, but somehow he was overlooked.

When it comes to Howe potentially joining a Premier League rival, it seems unlikely. Howe wants to create a legacy at Newcastle – he said it himself.

Back in 2023, Howe said: “I’m determined to try and stay here for as long as I can. To do that, I need to be at my best.”
