Newcastle United defender Dan Burn admits he was not used to seeing one of his teammates so upset following the final game of the season.

The last day of the campaign was a strange occasion for Newcastle United. Eddie Howe’s side lost to Everton but results elsewhere meant they still qualified for the Champions League

Burn admits he does not like the end of the season, as it means the end for various players at the club.

While much of the focus will be on the players Newcastle can sign this summer, there will also be exits to consider.

One of those is Callum Wilson, who did something that surprised Burn after the Everton game.

Dan Burn surprised by Callum Wilson amid Newcastle United exit rumours

Wilson looked emotional after Newcastle’s game with Everton, with his contract set to expire.

It could well have been his last appearance for the club, although that is no longer as obvious as it was a few weeks ago.

Newcastle are in contract talks with Wilson, despite the fact he didn’t trigger one automatically after failing to make the required number of appearances.

Burn admits he’s not used to seeing Wilson so upset. Speaking to The Chronicle, Burn said: “I hate this time of year.

“Because no matter what happens, there are always changes, no matter if it is one, five, or 10 players going, it’s never ever the same. You feel like when you have put that much into the season, there’s always a bit of emotion at the end. I am not used to seeing Callum Wilson like that.

“It is strange because he’s not an emotional person. He is usually quite a happy person so it was sad to see. I am not sure what is happening and I don’t know if he does either. But it was a nice moment for him to get the appreciation.”

The surprise claim Callum Wilson has made about his future

Wilson believes he can play for England at the 2026 World Cup, despite the fact he’s not represented his country in years.

That’s an admirable goal to have and stranger things have happened in football, though it does feel ambitious.

If Wilson were to force his way into Thomas Tuchel’s thinking, he’d surely need to be playing regularly.

With that in mind, it’s hard to see him accepting a back-up role at Newcastle if he really does have dreams about playing in a second World Cup.

He’s much more likely to regularly start at a club like Leeds than Newcastle, with Alexander Isak his competition at St James’ Park
