Dan Burn sends a Champions League reality check to Newcastle fans, ‘without being disrespectful’

Dan Burn believes Newcastle United have little reason to fear in the Champions League this season.

Eddie Howe’s second Champions League campaign at Newcastle United ended in defeat on Thursday night.

Indeed, Newcastle lost 2-1 to Barcelona in the Champions League at St James’ Park thanks to a Marcus Rashford brace.

Still, Howe’s side performed well and really should have scored more than they did. While a disappointing evening in the end, there were certainly positives to take from the first-half performance. They really should have scored when they were on top, although there is clearly no shame in losing to a team as good as the Catalan giants.

Now, Newcastle head into a winnable run of games, with a trip to Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise up next in the competition.

Burn was quick to remind everyone of that.

They, on paper at least, look much more favourable for Howe’s side.

Though there is the rather daunting prospect of another trip to Paris Saint-Germain in January to come, Burn believes Newcastle are in a good place in the Champions League.

Speaking to The Chronicle, he said: “Without being disrespectful, the rest of the teams that we’re playing are winnable, it won’t be Barcelona and PSG every week.

“Those are the two games that are going to be the toughest ones.

“There’s games that are winnable in there if we turn up and play like we’re supposed to”

In the build-up to the Barcelona game, the club released a video highlighting all the trips supporters can look forward to.

Burn was seen in the video talking up the exciting visits to Paris, Brussels and Marseille ahead for Toon fans.

When it got to Leverkusen, however, the England international was a lot less enthusiastic.

The German city is not particularly known as a tourist destination, explaining Burn’s phrasing.

Still, the travelling Geordies will no doubt find a way to make their trip an unforgettable one…
