Dan Burn has returned to his boyhood club and hit the ground running, instantly tightening up the defence.
It is clear that Burn was not the club’s first choice, with players based on the continent such as Sven Botman chased at length first.
But Newcastle needed players equipped to deal with the demands of the Premier League and that is what they got with Burn.

Burn was interviewed by Football Focus about the start to his Newcastle career, as the Magpies have shot up the table and look all but safe.
He said: “Surreal. We’ve been getting some good results which always helps.
“Amazing – it couldn’t have gone any better. It’s been everything that I dreamed of when I was a kid.
“Love pulling on the black and white jersey and playing in front of all my friends and family at St James’ Park.”

Burn’s passion for the club has shone through and he has been the organiser that Newcastle have sorely needed for years at the back.
Someone like Botman may be one for the future, with Champions League experience, but Burn has been the player Newcastle need for the here and now.
Will an England call-up come between now and the World Cup? All he can do is keep on playing well and Gareth Southgate will have to take note.
