Dan Burn reveals what Newcastle United have learned after spending ‘a lot of money’

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn admits Eddie Howe has to lean on his squad after such a big transfer window.

Though it was a difficult few months for the club, Newcastle United spent around £250million during the 2025 summer transfer window

Obviously, the fact they recouped a large portion of that through the sales of Alexander Isak and Sean Longstaff among others in recent seasons helps but owners PIF did put their hands in their pockets.

As such, the Newcastle United squad is much deeper and looks way better equipped for a European campaign this time around.

Though injuries are currently robbing Howe of some very useful options, that hopefully won’t be the case all season.

Indeed, the Newcastle United manager made seven changes from the team who lost to Barcelona in the Champions League for Sunday’s draw at Bournemouth.

Although his side looked relatively disjointed in an attacking sense at times, Burn has said the rotation policy should continue.

Dan Burn wants Newcastle United to rotate their squad more

The England defender was speaking after Newcastle United’s 0-0 draw with Bournemouth

He admitted that the team have learned their lessons from the 2023-24 season, during which Howe’s side were decimated by an injury crisis as they battled across a number of fronts.

Burn is of the belief that the club have invested well and that rotation should be embraced.

“We’ve invested well in the summer and we’ve spent a lot of money,” he told Sky Sports.

“We should use those players and it’s probably a lesson we’ve learned from the previous campaign in the Champions League.”

Eddie Howe has confirmed his plans to rotate the Newcastle United squad

Howe certainly appears to have taken note from Newcastle’s last journey on the elite stage of European football.

Obviously, the fact he has a deeper squad helps now, and that will only improve once Yoane Wissa and Jacob Ramsey are back from injury.

Indeed, the Magpies boss has confirmed he will likely keep rotating his options up until Christmas, such is the packed nature of the schedule ahead.

When discussing replacing Jacob Murphy with Anthony Elanga for the Barcelona game, Howe said: “I think they both understand – especially in a week like this week – that’s copy and repeat until Christmas for us.”

That feels wise but there’s also a chance that his side struggle for consistency as a result.
