Dan Burn will find it incredibly hard to ever top the week he has had at Newcastle United and England.

The week started with Dan Burn being called up to England by new Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel. He is joined at St George’s Park by Newcastle United teammates Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento.

But the 32-year-old quickly had to put his first international call-up to the back of his mind with the Carabao Cup final fast approaching.

Wembley was shaking when Burn scored the opener for Newcastle just moments before half-time. He deservedly took home the Player of the Match award after a dominant performance in the capital.

Burn’s celebrations at Wembley were iconic, and the Blyth-born defender said he was “numb” after lifting the trophy. It was easily the best week of his entire career.

Dan Burn responds to Alan Shearer retirement calls

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has showered Dan Burn with praise following the final and he revealed in the latest The Rest is Football episode that he told Burn he should retire on a high.

“Where do we start with big Dan Burn?” Shearer asked. “I was having a pint with him last night and I said ‘you might as well retire man.’”

However, Burn seems as focused as ever, cutting his celebrations in London short to meet up with the England team early on Monday morning.

In his first England press conference, Burn responded to Shearer’s call for retirement, claiming he still has a few years left.

“I think I’m just trying to take it camp by camp at the minute, I just want to make as much of a big impression as I can and try to make the next camp,” Burn said.

“Obviously, it’s every little kid’s dream to play the World Cup even just playing for your country. To know I’ve got that opportunity if I take it, it’s special.

“I said to him [Shearer], he said I think you should retire. I was like, I’ve got England international duty tomorrow. He was ‘oh yeah, well after that.’ No, I still feel l’ve got a good few years left in us yet.”

Dan Burn will have World Cup dreams at England

At the age of 32, Burn admitted that he thought his chances of playing for England were beyond him.

But he has been sensational for Newcastle this season and he saved his best performance yet for Sunday’s Wembley showpiece.

Burn will now hope to feature at Wembley again this week if he is given his England debut by Tuchel.

The Three Lions take on Albania on Friday before facing Latvia on Monday evening, with both World Cup qualifiers taking place at Wembley.

With the 2026 World Cup just around the corner, Burn will be hopeful of impressing this month and challenging for a spot in Tuchel’s squad.
