Newcastle United booked their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals on Wednesday.

The Magpies cruised past Brentford to reach their second Carabao Cup semi-final in three seasons. Toon boss Eddie Howe is keen to win Newcastle’s first trophy since 1969 but faces a tough challenge with the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal present in the Carabao Cup semi-final draw.

Howe will be pleased that the momentum from Newcastle’s win against Leicester on Saturday at St James’ Park was carried into the Brentford win with a packed out St James’ Park in fine voice under the floodlights.

A brace from Sandro Tonali and a second-half strike from Fabian Schar sealed the deal for the Magpies and ensured Yoan Wissa’s late goal meant nothing in the grand scheme of things.

The players knew the importance of this game but not many of them will get it more than Dan Burn.

Dan Burn’s plea to Newcastle fans following Virgil van Dijk’s St James’ Park comments

Since he was a kid, Burn has been travelling to St James’ Park as a fan to watch his team play. He gets what it’s like to support the team and he’s living the dream now by playing for his boyhood club.

Burn was part of the Newcastle team that lost in the Carabao Cup final in 2023 which is bound to be a chip he has on his shoulder.

He has shown his commitment to the club since signing for Newcastle from Brighton in 2022.

In Newcastle’s matchday programme, Burn wrote his column previewing the Brentford game. In the column, he brought up comments from Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk regarding St James’ Park.

He said: “Virgil van Dijk commented on how much our crowd lifts us when we play at home… opposition players know how much of a huge part you play in our performance. When you’re loud and lively and pushing us on, we play better – so we need you all tonight.”

St James’ Park is known for the passionate crowds when it matters and the win against Brentford saw the fans in top form once again – possibly thanks to Burn’s comments.

Van Dijk’s Liverpool drew with Newcastle at St James’ Park in December with Schar scoring a late equaliser. The crowd were electric that night.

Fan group Wor Flags continued their trend of displays with their Bring Your Scarf campaign and a plethora of tifos that filled the stands with black and white.

Newcastle must take the St James’ Park atmosphere with them to Ipswich

The Magpies take on Ipswich on Saturday as they look for their third consecutive win in all competitions.

Howe’s side sit 12th in the Premier League table, albeit five points off a Champions League spot but a win could see them move up to sixth if other results go their way.

Away form isn’t something Newcastle should be proud of though with just two wins out of eight.

Newcastle never fail to disappoint with their away following with fans across the Premier League recognising it as one of the best. But the crowd at St James’ Park has been a massive help for the players on the pitch in the wins against Leicester and Brentford so the players will be hoping for the same on Saturday when they make the trip to Portman Road.
