Dan Burn has now revealed how he truly feels about Sunderland after Newcastle United’s derby day victory on Saturday.

The two teams finally met for the first time since 2016 and Burn has now made a shocking claim that a fair few Newcastle fans are bound to disagree with.

After the game, Burn spoke to the i where he admitted that he hopes Sunderland do get promoted from the Championship because he enjoys playing in those kinds of atmospheres so much.

Burn says playing against Sunderland was ‘special’

With it being almost eight years since the last Tyne-Wear derby, this one had been eagerly anticipated for weeks since the FA Cup third round draw was made last month.

It was also a monumental day for Newcastle who had not won a game against Sunderland since a 1-0 victory in 2011, so they had every reason to celebrate the way they did with a team photo on the pitch.

Having played in some of the most iconic stadiums around Europe against some of the biggest teams in the Champions League, Newcastle were well versed in playing in a loud and intense atmosphere.

Burn has now claimed that he relishes playing in those types of games and hopes that Sunderland get promoted back to the Premier League so that they can play against each other more often.

In the interview, Burn said: “The atmosphere was class and it makes me want to play them even more.

“I will probably get pelters for saying it but I’d like them to come up. It would be nice because those are the games, as a kid, I wanted to see. It would be great for them to come up and we could do it more often. It’s been such a long time and it was a special day.”

Newcastle’s European experiences helped them on Saturday

As previously mentioned, Newcastle have gained a lot of experience from playing in Europe this season, even if they didn’t manage to make it out of the group stages.

In previous seasons, the derby has almost felt like a cup final for both teams as the likelihood of either of them actually winning a trophy was very slim, and Newcastle always seemed to crumble under the pressure in recent memory.

Now, having played in a Carabao Cup final back in February and playing on the biggest stage in Paris, Milan and Dortmund, Newcastle didn’t need to worry about the pressure in facing Sunderland.
