Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth now shares what he does whilst the Magpies are playing at St James’ Park.

Taking to an interview with Sky Sports before the Toon’s 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Leicester City yesterday, the Tyneside chief claims he cannot talk to anyone whilst the game is on.

“Well, I’ve been doing this for a long time, so I’ve watched a lot of games now,” Ashworth said, as relayed by Football Daily on Twitter.

“You become emotionally attached to your football club and it means a lot.

“So yes, I feel sick during the game. I’m not a particularly good watcher, I have to go and sit on my own, I don’t talk to anybody.

“I’m watching the game for all sorts of different reasons, but ultimately these are the sorts of games you want to be involved in, and its privilege to be here.”

Ashworth isn’t a good spectator

Ashworth joined Newcastle this summer from Brighton and Hove Albion, where he was technical director.

Along with head of recruitment Steve Nickson, he oversaw an outstanding summer transfer window.

Ashworth welcomed club-record signing Alexander Isak to the club in a deal worth £63m.

He also helped lure goalkeeper Nick Pope and centre-back Sven Botman to St James’ Park, who have both been crucial for Eddie Howe’s side this term.

It’s great to see the sporting director fully immersed as a fan of the Magpies, having only been with the club for six months.

The Toon chief will continue to play a huge part in Newcastle’s success for a long time to come, so it’s amazing to see the work being done between Ashworth and Howe at St James’ Park.
