Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has claimed Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron needs to slacken if Spurs are to finish in the top-four this season.

Speaking with Paraguayan outlet La Nacion, the Argentina international lauded the 29-year-old, who has been absolutely electric for the Magpies this term.

However, with the attacker in such fine form, the centre-back suggested that his side need the Toon star to experience a dip in performance if the Lilywhites are to qualify for the Champions League.

“Newcastle are fighting for Champions League places,” Romero said.

“I always watch the Newcastle games and he [Almiron] is in a very good moment.

“You can tell he’s a great player and let’s hope he slackens off a bit and we go up.”

In 22 Premier League appearances this season, the Paraguay international leads Newcastle’s scoring with ten goals.

Although the vast majority of these came before the World Cup, the winger proved just how crucial he is to the Toon’s success with his leveller against Bournemouth yesterday.

However, from Eddie Howe’s perspective, he may be thinking his front-line need to be doing more if they are to finish in the top-four this year.

The Magpies have drawn five of their last six games in the league, and even when they win, they usually only do so by a one-goal lead.

This puts three points at risk, as anything can happen in the final few minutes of a Premier League match.

This seems like unfair criticism at this stage in the season, especially with Newcastle’s 17-game unbeaten streak.

However, if they don’t get firing in the final third anytime soon, we could see a drop-off in the league table.
